Root & Reason was built on one belief: that honest, practical sustainability writing is rarer than it should be.
Most sustainability content falls into one of two traps: either it's so aspirational it makes you feel bad for not living in a converted barn with a capsule wardrobe, or it's so corporate it's clearly just greenwashing dressed as advice.
We started Root & Reason because we wanted neither. We wanted writing that was honest about trade-offs, clear about what actually makes a difference, and free from the performance anxiety that dominates too much of the sustainability conversation.
Everything we publish is tested in real life — in a real flat, with a real budget, and the usual constraints of a busy week.
We don't pretend the transition is easy or that one reusable bag changes everything. We tell you what actually moves the needle.
Every claim is sourced. We cite the research, not just the Instagram aesthetic. Sustainability needs data, not just vibes.
We don't take sponsored placements, affiliate deals, or free products in exchange for coverage. Our independence is non-negotiable.
